Top things to do if you're a student spending summer in Leicester

Updated: Jun 22, 2022

If you’re spending summer in Leicester and looking for the best ways to enjoy the sun and city, this list has got you covered! Here at ULIV we offer summer lettings, so whether you’re needing somewhere to stay for a summer internship or university summer courses, our buildings are all situated in ideal locations - ready to welcome you to the city!

Caribbean Carnival

Leicester’s Caribbean Carnival is the UK’s largest celebration of Caribbean culture and heritage outside of London. At this annual city-wide party you can expect to enjoy vibrant floats, music, performers and dancers being showcased across the city throughout the day. There are also endless opportunities for you to get involved yourself. With food and drink, interactive activities and market stalls - the carnival is sure to keep you more than entertained. This year it will be taking place right in the middle of summer on Saturday the 6th of August 2022.

Explore Leicester’s parks and nature

Throughout the year the weather in Leicester can be very hit or miss, so that makes summer the best time to explore some of the beautiful parks that Leicester has to offer. Leicester has some great parks within walking distance of all of our ULIV buildings. Near to the DMU campus, Abbey Park is one of Leicester’s most scenic parks and offers a wide range of facilities to pass the day. You can have a match on the tennis courts or get lost in the Lavender maze. If you’re closer to Uni of Leicester, why not explore the tropical Leicester Botanic Garden. Learn about the importance of global biodiversity with their extensive collection of unique plants.

Brunch in the sun

Leicester offers an extensive list of delicious must-try brunch spots, and with many offering outdoor seating, there’s no better way to spend a sunny morning than in the city centre! Some of our top picks if you’re looking for quality food with sunny outdoor seating are Bru, &Kith, and Kai in the city centre, or Grounded Kitchen on Queens Road.

Shopping, shopping, and more shopping!

Packed with independent stores, shopping centres and fully-equipped shopping parks, you can shop till you drop in Leicester! In the city centre you obviously have the great Highcross shopping centre - with over 100 stores to keep you busy all day; and why not stop at CUPP for a refreshing bubble tea!? Slightly further out of the centre is Fosse Park. Having been recently renovated, Fosse Park is home to some great shops including designer store Flannels, as well as a great food hall with many options.

Get social with bowling and mini golf

Wanting a way to get social and have some fun at the same time? Take a trip down to Lane7 in the city centre, where you can enjoy bowling, table tennis, mini golf and arcade games! On top of that they serve great food and drinks for you and your friends to enjoy after a competitive game. If you’re a big mini golf fan, there’s also Caddyshackers. With unique and quirky design and delicious cocktails, this is a great spot for students.

Here at ULIV we are currently offering summer lets at The Bank and look forward to welcoming you into our two new buildings as well! Whether you’re a summer-let student or one of our long-term residents, you can expect the same top quality experience and amenities. You get the same access to all our facilities and also receive free bedding packs, making sure you feel at home even if it is just a short stay!
